It all began when...

Muriel Barclay de Tolly was born in Nova Scotia Canada, and immigrated to the United States with her husband George. In 1985, she opened the famous Muriel’s restaurant, in Newport, Rhode Island with the help of her six children. On a dare, she entered her seafood chowder in the Newport Chowder Festival and went on to win the contest for three consecutive years. This placed her in the Newport, Rhode Island Chowder Hall of Fame in 1989.
